Effort
Community participation is at the heart of the Kaua‘i Fungal Biodiversity Survey. Through our workshops people of all ages have joined in learning about fungi and how to contribute to the growing record of fungal biodiversity on the island.
Workshops in 2023 introduced mushroom identification, fungal biology, invasive species, conservation, and genetic sequencing. Community members have also contributed photographs and observations to our iNaturalist project, strengthening the dataset and expanding knowledge of Kaua‘i’s fungi. Our annual workshops will continue to provide opportunities for learning and participation.
This January, the Kaua‘i Mushroom Summit 2026 was a multi-day gathering of workshops and activities celebrating fungi and conservation. Attendees directly contributed to the project through their participation and support.
The 2026 Team
The Kaua‘i Fungal Biodiversity Survey is guided by a collaborative team of scientists, students, and community members who share a passion for fungi and conservation. Together, they coordinate surveys, collect and preserve specimens, and lead workshops that connect research with the wider community. Each person brings unique expertise, from field ecology and taxonomy to education and outreach, ensuring the project grows in both scientific depth and community impact.
